CHAPTER FOURTEEN

No Strings Attached

Vega’s stomach lurched. This couldn’t be possible. She had marked Jason with the school’s signet. She’d warded him. Fae weren’t supposed to be able to take him. There were rules. They could only take children who hadn’t been claimed by someone else.

Not that she should have expected underhanded, devious monsters to abide by rules. The Fae Courts were the ones who created these mandates. Even Fae royalty bent their own rules to suit their needs. Rogue Fae like the one that had stolen Callisto lived to break those rules. And much of the time they got away with it.

Vega shuddered, remembering what had happened to her little sister. She could only imagine Jason was about to suffer a similar fate. She had failed another child. Her knees went weak, and she dropped to the ground. The cold that had crept over her settled into her bones, making her shiver uncontrollably.

Jason was gone. She shouldn’t have let him out of her sight. She should have taken him straight to Merlin’s Academy for Boys. Once again, she had failed, and another student had died on her watch.

It took several minutes before she was able to rise to her feet again. She didn’t know what to do. When something happened to a student at Lady of the Lake, she was supposed to inform the administration, fill out an incident report, and in some cases, Principal Gordmayer had made her inform the family. But that was in the Unseen Realm, and those parents knew about magic. What was she supposed to tell Jason’s father?

She could only imagine how poorly that conversation would go when she said, “Excuse me. I was informing your son of his magical lineage and that he needs to go to a school for Witchkin, but a shadow intervened and swallowed him up.”

There had to be a protocol for this kind of incident, but she didn’t know what it was. Had Mr. Gordmayer forgotten to give her a recruiters’ handbook of guidelines for what to do in emergencies? Maybe there wasn’t one.

A shadow briefly blotted out the sun. She followed the shadow of a bird with her eyes. It dipped out of sight below the trees, but she recognized the croaking caw of a raven. The bird from earlier was still here. Perhaps that meant she had a chance to confront Jason’s abductor and make her claim on him clear. Vega hastened toward the direction the raven had gone.

Within a minute, she found the path once again. This was the path heading toward the horse arena. From the growl of the raven, she knew the bird had to be close. She had left a snare on this path. She had concluded that any of the snares that were set for children could be utilized by Fae. She’d made hers temporary on purpose so that Fae wouldn’t be able to use them to snatch children after she left. She hadn’t considered they might take advantage of her traps while she was nearby.
